SHENYANG, Liaoning – BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) opened a new engine plant with a light metal foundry in Shenyang, Liaoning Province on January 22.
The new engine plant will be dedicated to produce the latest generation of the BMW TwinPower Turbo three- and four-cylinder petrol engines as well as high-voltage batteries for future plug-in hybrid models. A total workforce of around 2,000 BBA employees will work at this engine plant over the long term.
The light metal foundry, with a capacity of up to 15,000 tons of aluminum per year, is modelled on its partner plant in Landshut, Germany, whose wealth of experience is integrated into production processes.
Both the engine plant and the light metal foundry will employ the latest state-of-the-art production standards and supply BMW Brilliance’s Dadong and Tiexi automotive plants. Besides, its capacity, which currently stands at up to 300,000 units per year, is tied to the production volumes at the two automotive plants. In 2015, local automotive production reached more than 287,000 units.
The light metal foundry sets new standards for sustainable production and can secure nearly emission-free production of sand cores. For the first time in China, inorganic binders are used to achieve the nearly emission-free production of sand cores. The inorganic binders have the power to enable the emitted combustion residues to be reduced by 98 percent, compared with the organic casting processes typically used in the industry. In addition, 90 percent of the sand used for casting can be recycled to reduce waste to a minimum. Innovative wire arc spraying technology (LDS) is also being introduced for production of cast-aluminum crankcases.
BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine features a high level of efficiency and low emissions, representing the latest development in the BMW EfficientDynamics engine family. Drive trains exhibit merits in improved heat management and acoustic features as well as significant weight reduction owing to the high percentage of aluminum application.
This new engine generation is characterized by the standardized and location-independent modular production.
The standardized production system for modular engines ensures uniform and stable production process that enhances quality. Besides, they are all in-line engines and every derivative is produced on the basis of a core engine and a modular kit, which enlarges the portion of identical parts used within each combustion type. It also forms synergies with the international BMW Group engine production locations in Munich (Germany), Steyr (Austria) and Hams Hall (UK). Therefore, optimized value stream and scale economies can be achieved.
The location-independent modular production features high flexibility, allowing the company to respond quickly to changes in market and consumer demand.
Anton Heiss, president of BBA, said: “BMW Brilliance is recognized as one of the most successful premium manufacturers in China. Three new models are already in the pipeline for local production. One of these models, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, will be launched in the first quarter of 2016.”
