BMW expands Shanghai center to spot trends

BMW Group is expanding its research center in Shanghai to monitor local trends and technologies for possible use in BMW vehicles.

In 2011, BMW opened an infotainment lab in Shanghai. The next year, it added a Chinese office affiliated with the BMW subsidiary Designworks USA.

The new operation, dubbed BMW Group Technology Office China, will employ eight researchers.

“The central objective of our team is to check new trends and technologies in China — from the automotive as well as nonautomotive sectors — for their practicability in BMW products, and where appropriate make them available in the vehicle as fast as possible,” said Carsten Isert, the research unit’s chief.

BMW operates similar technology research entities in Mountain View, Calif. and in Tokyo.
