Uruguay-based transportation company Buquebus recently worked with CTS Auto SA and BYD to deploy the first of several electric buses in its fleet, according to a company release.
Buquebus is the largest tourism transportation company in Uruguay connecting more than 2 million passengers in Argentina and Uruguay a year by boat and by bus.
The initial units that Buquebus brings on board will run dedicated routes in the city of Colonia, but the company intends to add more all-electric buses to handle urban transit needs.
Buquebus, BYD and the government of Uruguay first announced their partnership in July 2012.
BYD’s electric vehicle business in South America has maintained steady growth over the past five years and 2013 may be its harvest year. Before the e-bus launch in Uruguay, BYD has delivered electric taxis in Bogotá and put e6 and K9 under test run in San Diego and Montevideo.
BYD has already established a branch company in Brazil and an electric bus manufacturing plant will be built in the country in two years.
