BEIJING – Beijing-Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd. launched the ix35 sport utility vehicle in Beijing on April 8. Six variants of the urban SUV come in 2.0L and 2.4L displacements, carrying price tags ranging from ¥169,800 to ¥242,800 ($24,609-$35,188).
The ix35, an upgraded model of the Hyundai Tucson, made its China debut last November. The new SUV is measured at 4,420×1,820×1,690 mm and has a wheelbase of 2,640 mm.
The ix35 comes with multiple comfort and safety features such as Smart Entry & Start System, automatic headlamps, panorama sunroof, DVD navigation, leather seats and seat heating, among others.
It is available with 2.0L and 2.4L Hyundai θ-II engine options, featuring Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) and a Variable Induction System (VIS). The 2.0L engine provides a top power of 120 kW/6,200 rpm and peak torque of 194 Nm/4,600 rpm, while the 2.4L engine delivers maximum power of 128 kW/6,000 rpm and torque of 226 Nm/4,000 rpm.
The ix35 aims to rival the Nissan Qashqai, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Volkswagen Tiguan in the Chinese SUV market.
“Beijing-Hyundai has high hopes that the ix35 will lift Hyundai’s brand image in the Chinese market,” Baik Hyo Heum, sales manager of the Sino-Korean JV told reporters.
He also revealed that the JV currently produces 4,000-5,000 units of the ix35 SUV per month, and its monthly production capacity will be lifted to 7,000-10,000 units in the next half of 2010.
