China April automobile sales down 0.49 percent

BEIJING – China’s automobile sales in April declined 0.49 percent from the previous year to 1.99 million units, according to data released by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on May 11.

The top 10 automakers by sales in April were SAIC, Dongfeng, FAW, Chang’an, BAIC, GAC, Great Wall Motor, Brilliance, JAC and Chery. Combined sales of these 10 companies reached about 1.79 million units, accounting for 89.6 percent of total automobile sales.

A total of around 1.67 million passenger vehicles were sold in April, up 3.72 percent from last year. Passenger car sales were 932,000 units, down 9.63 percent year-on-year, and SUVs 461,600 units, up 48.49 percent.

The Ford Focus ranked first on the list of sales of the top 10 car models in April by selling 28,000 units, followed by Volkswagen Santana (27,900 units) and Nissan Sylphy (26,700 units).

Sales of MPVs continued to climb with a growth rate of 22.15 percent to 167,000 units, but those of microvans dropped 16.8 percent to 108,200 units.

Passenger vehicle sales of the Chinese brands in April increased 14.3 percent year-on-year to 686,400 units and the market share of Chinese brand passenger vehicles was up 3.81 percentage points to 41.13 percent.

Commercial vehicle sales came to 325,700 units with a year-on-year decline of 17.61 percent. Bus sales reached 48,300 units, down 2.24 percent. Truck sales were 277,300 units, down 19.8 percent. 

In the first four months of the year, automobiles sales were 8.14 million units, an increase of 2.77 percent from the same period of the previous year. Of the total, passenger vehicle sales amounted to 6.97 million units, up 7.67 percent on a yearly basis. Commercial vehicle sales came to 1.17 million units in January-April, a drop of 19.13 percent year-on-year.
