China February automobile sales down 0.2 percent

BEIJING – China’s automobile sales in February declined 0.2 percent on a yearly basis to 1.59 million units (Table 1), according to data released by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on March 10.

Top 10 automakers by sales in February were SAIC, Chang’an, Dongfeng, FAW, BAIC, GAC, Brilliance, Great Wall Motor, JAC and BYD. Combined sales of these 10 companies reached 1.44 million units, accounting for 90.4 percent of the total automobile sales.

A total of around 1.4 million passenger vehicles were sold in February, up 6.4 percent from the previous year. Passenger car sales were 809,000 units, down 2.6 percent, and SUVs 330,700 units, up 39.4 percent.

The Volkswagen Lavida ranked first on the list of sales of the top 10 car models in February by selling 36,100 units, followed by Volkswagen Santana (26,500 units) and Hyundai Elantra (20,500 units).

Sales of MPVs continued to climb with a growth rate of 17.7 percent to 158,000 units, but those of microvans dropped 10.1 percent to 99,000 units.

Combined sales of the top 10 passenger car makers in February were 596,500 units, taking up 73.7 percent of the total car sales (Table 2).

Passenger vehicle sales of Chinese brands in February increased 19.7 percent year-on-year to 605,200 units and the market share of Chinese brand passenger vehicles was up 4.8 percentage points to 43.3 percent.

Commercial vehicle sales came to 196,600 units with a year-on-year decline of 30.9 percent. Bus sales reached 32,700 units, an increase of 5.7 percent. Truck sales were 163,900 units, down 35.3 percent. 

In the first two months of the year, output and sales of automobiles were 3,919,100 and 3,912,900 units, an increase of 6.22 and 4.25 percent from the same period of the previous year. Of the total, passenger vehicle production and sales amounted to 3,382,900 and 3,434,700 units respectively, up 10.91 and 8.72 percent on a yearly basis.

In the commercial vehicle sector, output and sales came to 536,200 and 478,200 units in January-February, a drop of 16.17 and 19.49 percent year-on-year.
