China January automobile sales up 7.6 percent

BEIJING – China’s automobile sales rose 7.6 percent in January on a yearly basis to 2.32 million units (Table 1), according to data released by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on February 10.

Combined sales of the top 10 automakers in the month totaled nearly 2.1 million units, accounting for about 90.7 percent of the total sales (Table 2).

A total of 2.04 million passenger vehicles were sold in January, up 10.4 percent. Passenger car sales were over 1.22 million units, an increase of 2.2 percent, and SUVs 487,300 units, up 51.1 percent.

The Volkswagen Lavida ranked first on the list of sales of the top 10 car models in January by selling 39,700 units, followed by Volkswagen Jetta (35,100 units) and Volkswagen Sagitar (31,100 units).

Sales of MPVs continued to climb with a growth rate of 17.3 percent to 225,500 units, but those of microvans dropped 24.3 percent to103,300 units.

Combined sales of the top 10 passenger vehicle makers in January were nearly 1.27 million units, taking up 62.6 percent of the total passenger vehicle sales (Table 3).

Passenger vehicle sales of the Chinese brands in January increased 21.5 percent to 867,800 units and the market share of Chinese brand passenger vehicles was up 3.9 percentage points to 42.6 percent.

Sales of Chinese brand passenger cars reached 285,800 units, up 0.7 percent. Their market share declined 0.35 percentage point to 23.4 percent.

Commercial vehicle sales in the month came to 281,600 units with a year-on-year decline of 9 percent.

Bus sales reached 48,700 units, an increase of 8.9 percent. Truck sales were 232,900 units, down 12.1 percent. 

Combined sales of the top 10 commercial vehicle makers were 206,300 units, which took up 73.3 percent of the total commercial vehicle sales (Table 4).
