China auto sales fall 1.75 percent in September

BEIJING – China’s automobile sales dropped 1.75 percent in September to 1,617,400 units, the first month since February that year-on-year sales have dropped, according to data released by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on October 10.

The passenger vehicle sector (car, MPV, SUV and microvan) also experienced the first year-on-year sales decline in eight months as sales dropped 0.3 percent to 1,315,600 units.

Sales of SUVs rose 17.65 percent on a yearly basis to 171,400 units in the month, while that of cars, MPVs and microvans were 928,800, 41,700 and 173,700 units, dropping 0.15, 13.11 and 11.23 percent, respectively.

The top 3 selling car models in September were the Ford Focus, Chevrolet Sail and Volkswagen Lavida, with respective sales of 33,600, 25,500 and 24,600 units. Combined sales of the top 10 selling car models reached 227,900 units, taking up nearly a quarter of total car sales in the month.

A total of 11,269,600 passenger vehicles were sold in the first nine months, up 6.94 percent. Sales of cars, MPVs and SUVs grew 5.69, 1.77 and 29.02 percent to 7,809,100, 367,800 and 1,437,300 units, while that of microvans declined 1.11 percent to 1,655,400 units.

In September, sales of independent passenger vehicle brands grew 7.51 percent to 561,900 units, accounting for 42.72 percent of total passenger vehicles sales, up 3.11 percentage points from September 2011. Sales of independent passenger vehicles over the first three quarters increased 2.63 percent to 4,570,100 units, accounting for 40.55 percent of total passenger vehicle sales, down 1.71 percentage points from the same previous period.

On the other hand, commercial vehicle sales in September fell 7.59 percent to 301,800 units. These include 37,500 buses and 209,500 trucks, which were down 2.5 and 3.67 percent respectively year-on-year. Combined sales of commercial vehicles in the first three quarters of the year were 2,822,700 units, down 8.82 percent. Bus sales rose 5.13 percent to 308,700 units, but truck sales fell 5.49 percent to 1,961,400 units.

In September, the top 10 automakers sold 1,405,100 vehicles, accounting for 86.87 percent of total sales.

Total vehicle sales in the first nine months of the year grew 3.37 percent to 14,092,300 units, ending eight consecutive months of increasing cumulative growth, CAAM’s data showed.

Export remained strong in September as a record 109,800 vehicles were shipped overseas, up 48.4 percent. In the first nine months, China exported 785,300 vehicles, up 27.9 percent.

CAAM attributed the drop in September vehicle sales mainly to the significant sales decline of Japanese passenger vehicles. Total sales of Japanese branded passenger vehicles dropped 40.82 percent to 160,000 units due to effects from the intensified anti-Japan protests in China during the month. Its share of the passenger vehicle market fell by nearly 6.5 percentage points to 12.16 percent compared with August.
