China automobile sales down 0.4 percent in May

BEIJING–China’s automobile sales in May declined 0.4 percent from the previous year to 1.9 million units, according to data released by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on June 10.

The top 10 automakers by sales in May were SAIC, Dongfeng, FAW, Chang’an, BAIC, GAC, Great Wall Motor, Brilliance, JAC and Geely. Combined sales of these 10 companies reached about 1.7 million units, accounting for 89.7 percent of total automobile sales.

A total of around 1.61 million passenger vehicles were sold in May, up 1.2 percent from last year. Passenger car sales were 907,000 units, down 10.08 percent year-on-year.

The Nissan Sylphy ranked first on the list of sales of the top 10 car models in May by selling 27,700 units, followed by the Volkswagen Lavida (27,200 units) and the Volkswagen Jetta (23,200 units).

Sales of SUVs and MPVs continued to climb with a growth rate of 43.9 and 7.86 percent to 459,300 and 140,500 units, respectively. But those of microvans dropped 22.43 percent to 102,500 units in May.

Passenger vehicle sales of the Chinese brands in May increased 8.2 percent on a yearly basis to 633,100 units and the market share of Chinese brand passenger vehicles was up 2.55 percentage points to 39.34 percent.

Commercial vehicle sales came to 294,500 units with a year-on-year decline of 8.29 percent. Bus sales reached 50,200 units, up 2.85 percent. Truck sales were 244,300 units, down 10.29 percent.

In the first five months of the year, automobile sales were about 10.05 million units, an increase of 2.11 percent from the same period of the previous year. Of the total, passenger vehicle sales amounted to 8.58 million units, up 6.36 percent on a yearly basis. Commercial vehicle sales came to 1.46 million units in January-May, a drop of 17.27 percent.
