China automobile sales down 3 percent in August

BEIJING – China’s automobile sales in August declined 3 percent from the previous year to over 1.66 million units, according to data released by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on September 10.

The top 10 automakers by sales in August were SAIC, Dongfeng, FAW, Chang’an, BAIC, GAC, Brilliance, Great Wall Motor, JAC and Chery. Combined sales of these 10 companies reached about 1.5 million units, accounting for 90.44 percent of total automobile sales.

A total of around 1.42 million passenger vehicles were sold in August, down 3.39 percent from last year. Passenger car sales were 761,600 units, down 16.39 percent year-on-year.

The Buick Excelle GT/XT ranked first on the list of sales of top 10 car models in August by selling 30,200 units, followed by the Volkswagen Lavida (28,100 units) and the Nissan Sylphy (25,800 units).

Sales of SUVs continued to climb with a year-on-year growth rate of 45.58 percent to 453,200 units. MPV sales dropped 9.05 percent to 132,700 units. Microvan sales reached 71,000 units, a year-on-year decline of 29.07 percent.

Passenger vehicle sales of the Chinese brands in August increased 2.54 percent on a yearly basis to 559,000 units and the market share of Chinese brand passenger vehicles was up 0.45 percentage point from July to 39.41 percent.

Commercial vehicle sales came to 246,000 units with a year-on-year decline of 0.6 percent. Bus sales reached 44,600 units, down 10.2 percent. Truck sales were 201,400 units, up 1.9 percent.

In the first eight months of the year, automobile sales remained about 15.02 million units from the same period of the previous year. Of the total, passenger vehicle sales amounted to 12.78 million units, up 2.6 percent on a yearly basis. Commercial vehicle sales came to 2.24 million units in January-August, a drop of 12.6 percent from 2014.
