China recalls 16.77 million cars since 2004

BEIJING – China had recalled about 16.77 million vehicles as of September 15, 2014, according to latest data released by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), China’s quality watchdog.

The recalls, by both homegrown and foreign carmakers, retrieved direct economic losses of Chinese consumers worth more than ¥20 billion ($3.25 billion) in the past decade after the country started a product recall mechanism in 2004, said AQSIQ.

The mechanism also applies to tires, motorcycles, toys and home appliances.
