China to apply certification system for clean-fuel, energy-saving vehicles in September

BEIJINGChina will voluntarily implement a unified certification system for light vehicles on the performance of fuel efficiency and environmental protection starting from September 1.

China, the fourth largest auto producer and the third largest auto market in the world, is facing increasing pressure to conserve energy and protect the environment, as its vehicle emissions and air pollution grow heavier each day.

Based on careful studies on the quality of vehicles since 2004, the State Certification Monitoring Commission (SCMC) has built up an auto certification system for energy conservation and environmental protection for both domestic-made vehicles and imports.

Hopefully the establishment of such a system will help to improve product quality and to promote the healthy development of the auto industry by guiding consumers in their auto purchases.

The system will be carried out in a unified manner, with the same rules and technical standards all over the country. Qualified vehicles will be marked with a certificate after a series of tests.

Certification tests on millions of light vehicles in China will be carried out first. By 2008, these tests will cover all types of vehicles.

Meanwhile, SCMC will set up a website to release information on nationwide certification for light vehicles and to receive complaints. Consumers can refer to data by marking the certificate.
