China’s automobile sales up 2.8 percent in October

BEIJING – China’s automobile sales in October rose 2.8 percent on a yearly basis to nearly 2 million units (Table 1), according to data released by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on November 14.

Combined sales of the top 10 automakers in the month totaled nearly 1.8 million units, accounting for more than 90 percent of the total sales (Table 2).

A total of over 1.7 million passenger vehicles were sold, up 6.4 percent compared with the same period of last year. Passenger car sales were over 1.05 million units, down 0.6 percent, and SUVs 387,300 units, up 36.3 percent.

The Ford Focus ranked first on the list of sales of the top 10 car models in October by selling 32,900 units, followed by the Volkswagen Lavida (31,700 units) and the Nissan Sylphy (30,700 units).

Sales of MPVs continued to climb with a growth rate of 36.3 percent to 184,300 units, but those of microvans dropped 33.4 percent to 84,800 units.

Combined sales of the top 10 passenger vehicle makers were over 1 million units, taking up 59 percent of the total passenger vehicle sales (Table 3).

Passenger vehicle sales of Chinese brands in October increased 3.4 percent to 675,600 units and their market share was down nearly 1.2 percentage points to 39.5 percent.

Sales of Chinese brand passenger cars reached 239,600 units, down 20.7 percent. Their market share declined 5.8 percentage points to 22.8 percent.

Commercial vehicle sales in the month came to 278,300 units with a year-on-year decline of 14.9 percent.

Bus sales reached 45,000 units, nearly the same as October 2013. Truck sales were 233,300 units, down 17.3 percent.

Combined sales of the top 10 commercial vehicle makers were 204,700 units, which took up 73.6 percent of the total commercial vehicle sales (Table 4).

China’s automobile sales in the first 10 months this year rose 6.6 percent to nearly 19 million units. Passenger vehicle sales reached almost 15.9 million units, up 9.8 percent, but sales of commercial vehicles decreased 7.1 percent to over 3.12 million units.
