BEIJING – China’s automobile sales in August rose 4.04 percent on a yearly basis to over 1.71 million units (Table 1), according to data released by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on September 11.

Combined sales of the top 10 automakers in the month totaled more than 1.55 million units, accounting for 90.4 percent of total sales (Table 2).

A total of nearly 1.47 million passenger vehicles (passenger cars, MPVs, SUVs and microvans) were sold, up 8.5 percent compared with the same period of last year. Passenger car sales were 910,800 units, up 1.3 percent, and SUVs 311,300 units, up 29.6 percent.
The Ford Focus ranked first on the list of sales of top 10 car models in August by selling 28,300 units, followed by two Volkswagen models, the Sagitar (25,700 units) and the Santana (24,500 units).
Sales of MPVs continued to climb with a high growth rate of 38.3 percent to 145,900 units, but those of microvans dropped 7.6 percent to 100,200 units.
Combined sales of the top 10 passenger vehicle makers were 920,200 units, taking up 62.7 percent of the total passenger vehicle sales (Table 3).

Passenger vehicle sales of Chinese brands in August increased 5.69 percent to 545,100 units, with their market share down by 1 percentage point to 37.13 percent.
Sales of Chinese brand passenger cars reached 177,900 units, down 21.09 percent. Their market share down 5.6 percentage points to 19.53 percent.
Sales of commercial vehicles (including buses, trucks, semi-trailers, bus chassis and truck chassis) in the month came to 247,400 units with a decline of 16.36 percent.
Bus sales reached 49,700 units, up 9.73 percent, and trucks 197,700 units, down 21.08 percent.
Combined sales of the top 10 commercial vehicle makers were 178,300 units, which took up 72.07 percent of the total commercial vehicle sales (Table 4).

China’s automobile sales in the first eight months this year rose 7.67 percent to nearly15.02 million units. Passenger vehicle sales reached nearly 12.5 million units, up 10.7 percent, but sales of commercial vehicles decreased 5 percent to 2.56 million units.
