China’s automobile sales up 9.18 percent in first quarter of 2014

BEIJING – China’s automobile sales in the first quarter of 2014 increased 9.18 percent on a yearly basis to nearly 6 million units (Table 1), according to data released by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on April 11.

Combined sales of the top 10 automakers in the first three months were over 5.35 million units, accounting for 90.38 percent of the total sales (Table 2).

A total of 4.87 million passenger vehicles (including passenger cars, MPVs, SUVs and microvans) were sold in the period, up 10.09 percent. Passenger car sales were close to 3.12 million units, up 4.66 percent, and SUVs 868,400 units, up 37.08 percent.

Sales of MPVs remained a high growth rate to 488,700 units, up 57.77 percent, but those of microvans dropped 21.08 percent to 397,300 units.

Combined sales of the top 10 passenger vehicle makers were nearly 3.1 million units, taking up 63.61 percent of the total passenger vehicle sales (Table 3).

Passenger vehicle sales of Chinese brands in the first quarter this year declined 1.46 percent to 1.88 million units, and their market share was down by 4.54 percentage points to 38.72 percent.

Sales of Chinese brand passenger cars reached 715,000 units, down 17.67 percent. Market share of Chinese brand passenger cars declined 6.23 percentage points to 22.95 percent.

Sales of commercial vehicles (including buses, trucks, semi-trailers, bus chassis and truck chassis) through March came to more than 1.05 million units with an increase of 5.13 percent year-on-year.

Bus sales reached 128,600 units, up 10.55 percent, and trucks 924,200 units, up 4.42 percent.

Combined sales of the top 10 commercial vehicle makers were 764,200 units, taking up 72.59 percent of the total commercial vehicle sales (Table 4).

China’s automobile sales in March this year climbed 6.58 percent to nearly 2.17 million units. Passenger vehicle sales in the month were over 1.71 million units, up 7.86 percent. Sales of commercial vehicles in March reached 459,000 units, up 2.09 percent.
