China’s motor vehicle parc to soon surpass 200 millio

BEIJING – China had 199 million motor vehicles on the road by the end of September, and this number will soon surpass 200 million, according to data recently released by the Traffic Administration Bureau under the Ministry of Public Security (MPS).

Of the 199 million vehicles on the road, 85 million are automobiles. The number of motor vehicle drivers has increased to 205 million, which is almost 16 percent of China’s population, while automobile drivers amounted to 144 million at September’s end. MPS data estimates that China currently adds more than 20 million motor vehicles and 22 million drivers per year.

Beijing, China’s capital city, which leads major Chinese cities in terms of vehicle population, had 4.52 million motor vehicles on the road by the end of September. The five million-mark is expected to be reached by June of 2011.
