China’s passenger vehicle sales down in May but up from last year

The May of 2008 saw a decline in China’s automobile output and sales due to unusual conditions after China was hit in mid-May by a catastrophic earthquake in Sichuan Province, southwest of the country. However, total production and sales on the China market are still on the rise in the first five months, says Xinhua news report.

According to the statistics from the China National Passenger Vehicle Association, China produced and sold 561,773 and 524,920 units of passenger vehicles in May this year, down respectively by 13.80 and 5.00 percent compared with the figures in April.

However, China’s passenger vehicle production in the first five months of 2008 rose to 3,031,537 units, including 2,234,328 sedans, 199,934 SUVs and 91,506 MPVs, up by 18.00, 17.90, 46.70 and 3.40 percent respectively year-on-year. Sales of passenger vehicles from January to May this year reached 2,805,940 units, up by 14.70 percent over the same period in 2007 (see Table 1 and Table 2 below).
