Chinese vehicle convoy heads to Milan in Trans-Euroasia trek

BEIJING – A vehicle convoy composed of 27 Chinese brand cars, SUVs and EVs from 13 Chinese automakers will set off on a Trans-Euroasia trek on August 8 with the 2015 World Expo in Milan as the final destination, where a dedicated display area will showcase the vehicles.

The convoy, involving 14 SUVs, 4 EVs and 8 sedans, is initiated by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) to promote Chinese independent car brands abroad and is the first event of its type ever held in China. It is wholly financed publicly without assistance from the government and the carmakers.

The convoy will spend about 40 days on the road, including about 30 days in Russia, and head to Milan via the ancient Silk Road in a 20,000-km trek. A road show will be held at the World Expo in Milan to promote the vehicles and brands in the convoy.

This large-scale joint action among major Chinese car brands is a rare occurrence and therefore the reasons behind it remain to be explored. When looking backwards, despite the fact that each Chinese independent auto brand has spared no efforts to extend its overseas business landscape, the consistent development is still hard to sustain. In Russia, the Middle East, ASEAN and South America, harsh regulations are often established to protect the development of domestic industries leaving no space for foreign enterprises. For instance, as results of the political conflicts and currency problems, dramatic sales slide of Chinese car brands in Russia and Ukraine could be seen. Under the circumstances of these harsh realities, it gradually dawns on the carmakers that the sincere cooperation with joint strengths is the way out of this harsh dilemma. So it is to be a non-reversible trend for Chinese independent car brands to head for strategic integration and cooperation. Besides, Chinese government, CAAM and CCPIT have been actively exploring ways for overseas promotion of Chinese independent car brands. And the 2015 World Expo in Milan delivers an opportunity for world to witness the significant development of Chinese independent car brands and the trek is a chance to showcase the actual performance of overall Chinese cars on the road.
