Diesel engine sales up 23.55 percent in July

Based on the latest data from China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), a total of 187,272 diesel engines were sold in July, jumping 23.55 percent from a year earlier. From January to July, diesel engine sales reached 1,607,599 units, up 1.13 percent, turning positive from the 0.82 percent drop in the January-June period. Combined sales of the top 10 diesel engine makers in July amounted to 157,681 units, or 84.20 percent of the market, slightly higher than the 82.48 percent in June.

In July, most of the top 10 diesel engine makers posted positive sales growths except Dongfeng, which saw a dip of 2.78 percent to 11,943 units. Only Yuchai and FAW had sales growths of under 10 percent, while Weichai, CNHTC, JMC all had growths of more than 35 percent. Yunnei Power’s engine sales surged by 55.29 percent in July, but its volume included engines for both automotive and non-automotive purposes.

From January to July, Weichai and Foton had the best performance in diesel engine sales with respective sales of 163,298 and 148,247 units, up 19.42 and 7.22 percent. Weichai’s positive performance was due mainly to the recovery of the heavy-duty truck market, which saw total sales of 390,027 units with a 17.22 percent growth. In July alone, heavy-duty truck sales soared 33.51 percent. As the traditional leader in heavy-duty truck engine sales, Weichai benefited naturally. As for Foton, its sales surge was mainly contributed by Foton-Cummins’ ISF2.8L/3.8L and ISG11/12 performance.

The rest of the diesel engine makers continue to experience sales declines in the January-July period, although those declines were smaller compared with the January-June period.
