FAW-Toyota will step up efforts to sell the hybrid Prius across China in 2013, according to the company’s vice president Jin Shanxue.
The third generation of hybrid Prius produced by Toyoda’s joint venture was launched in China since February 2012 with a price tag around ¥280,000 ($44,400).
But the model can be only sold in China’s 19 cities and Jilin Province.
The company aimed to sell 3,000 units in 2012, however the goal was only 80 percent accomplished.
According to Jin, the failed sales goal was a result of the limited sales regions.
The new Prius is powered by a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder VVT-i engine which generates a total output of 134 horsepower (100 kW) and “helped” by the nickel-metal hydride 36 HP and 650V battery pack. Fuel consumption has been improved to 4.3 liters per 100 km from 4.7 of the second generation Prius.
FAW-Toyota began producing the new Prius at its Changchun plant at the end of 2011.
