CHENGDU, Sichuan ¨C FAW-VW¡¯s Jetta has gone into production at a new base in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, since July 19, while its main production center continues to be Changchun.
The main purpose of the new assembly line is to take some load off the over-burdened Changchun production line while meeting the increasing demands of the customers. Jetta, one of the oldest VW models in China, sold 101,223 units in the first half of 2007, which is a 22.1 percent increase from last year.
Aiming for an annual output of 24,000 units, Jetta has been put into production in the existing FAW base in Chengdu, which meets Volkswagen¡¯s global standards of production. The units produced in Chengdu are to cater to the market demand in western China. FAW-VW Sales Co. Ltd. will continue to be in charge of sales and services.
“This will take us close to customers in western China and improve our services,¡± said Zhu Yanfeng, president of FAW. Li Chuncheng, communist party secretary of Chengdu city confirmed that the new investment from FAW contributes to the economic development of Sichuan Province. Mr. Li also praised the company for the job opportunities it has created by establishing this new operation.
When asked if the Jetta produced in Chengdu could change its logo and become an independent brand of the FAW Group, Ms. Gao Xin, the PR company executive representing the Volkswagen Group in China, told CBU/CAR that the units produced in Chengdu will definitely stick to the original Jetta logo and the FAW group has no intentions of starting a new brand.
