SHANGHAI – GM announced on October 28 that its OnStar in-vehicle safety, security and communication service will be activated operational in China in December.
This will mark OnStar’s first venture outside of North America.
Shanghai OnStar Telematics Co., Ltd., a joint venture among OnStar, LLC (a wholly owned subsidiary of GM), Shanghai Automotive Industry Sales Co., Ltd. (part of the SAIC Group) and Shanghai-GM, will provide the service exclusively on select Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicles sold by Shanghai-GM throughout China. Shanghai-GM will provide one year of OnStar, initially available in Mandarin Chinese, as a standard feature to customers with OnStar equipped new vehicles.
OnStar will provide the following 14 services in China at launch – Automatic Crash Response; Link to Emergency Services; Automatic Airbag Deployment Response; OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics; On Demand Diagnostics; Good Samaritan; Stolen Vehicle Location; Remote Door Unlock; Remote Horn and Lights; Roadside Assistance; Hands Free Calling; Point of Interest; Turn-by-Turn Navigation; and Destination Download.
“China represents a huge opportunity to bring the safety, security, and peace of mind of OnStar to SGM customers,” commented OnStar president Walt Dorfstatter. Ding Lei, president of Shanghai-GM, said the fact that Shanghai-GM customers will be the first to enjoy OnStar “underscores Shanghai-GM’s customer focus and drive for technological progress and improves its products and services as well as market competitiveness.”
Additional information regarding OnStar vehicle availability and pricing in China will be announced later this year.
