SAIC-GM-Wuling targets 400,000 vehicle sales in 2006

SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co., Ltd. announced a vehicle sales target of 400,000 units for 2006 at its annual sales forum in early January, according to a company news release.

The total includes 365,000 units of its Wuling brand mini vehicles and 35,000 units of Chevrolet brand mini cars, according to an inside source.

SAIC-GM-Wuling, GM’s mini vehicle JV based in Liuzhou of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, sold 337,880 units in 2005, up 43.37 percent from a year earlier, according to CBU-Autostats. Sales of minivans reached 264,814 units, up 43.37 percent. It was the top minivan producer in 2005 thanks to the launch of the Wuling Light model variants early last year. The Chevrolet Spark sold 26,900 units, up 165 percent. It also made the top score for the compact model in J.D. Power’s IQS report in 2005. The company sold 40,212 units of mini trucks last year for a market share of nearly 20 percent, second after mini vehicle leader Chang’an Group.

SAIC-GM-Wuling purchased Yizhong Automobile based in Qingdao last April, which helped increase the company’s annual output capacity from 300,000 to 450,000 units. The company’s new engine plant is also under construction and is expected to be put into production in 2007.
