SHANGHAI – Shanghai-Volkswagen produced its 5,000,000th vehicle, a Škoda Superb sedan, at its No. 3 Plant in Shanghai on October 14.
The occasion also marked the 25th anniversary of Volkswagen Group’s first vehicle JV in China and also the country’s first-ever car JV.
“Shanghai-Volkswagen has delivered an outstanding performance in 25 years,” said Winfried Vahland, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group China. “Today the joint venture has the largest and most modern car manufacturing capabilities in China. Our growth course in this market plays an important role in achieving the ambitious targets of the Volkswagen Group as it heads towards becoming the world’s number one automaker.”
Over the last 25 years, Shanghai-Volkswagen has increased its registered capital from ¥160 million ($23.53 million) to ¥11.5 billion. Total assets have grown from ¥350 million to ¥32.3 billion. It now has four vehicle production plants, one engine plant, a technology center and a design center. Its product range includes eight models from the Volkswagen brand (Polo Jinqing, Polo Jinqu, Cross Polo, Lavida, Santana, Santana Vista, Passat New Lingyu and Touran) and three models from the Škoda brand (Fabia, Octavia und Superb).
The company passed the one million vehicle mark in 1998. Further milestones on the way to five million vehicles came in June 2002 (two million), July 2005 (three million) and January 2008 (four million).
