Tianjin to establish world’s first EV contract manufacturing base

TIANJIN – The Tianjin Hi-Tech Zone and the city of Glasgow, Scotland signed an economic and trade cooperation MOU here on October 20 to deepen cooperation in new energy vehicles and part of it will be the establishment of the world’s first EV contract manufacturing base.

That base will be producing the Iconic electric MPV, which is in partnership with Lykan Hypersport for the design and brand operation of the Iconic brand. The new MPV will debut at the Shanghai Auto Show next April.

In the next step, Tianjin Hi-Tech Zone will focus on building an EV and power battery innovation center ranging from key components to the vehicle manufacturing chain. It also reached intent to jointly research and develop graphene batteries and EV light weighting technologies with the University of Manchester.

Tianjin Hi-Tech Zone has formed a complete industry chain. It has the international leading level of the Boston Power battery project with an investment of ¥6 billion ($923.1 million). In the area of electric motor and control, it has the Protean wheel hub motor production project which has a first-phase investment of ¥450 million and annual output value of ¥1.2 billion after start of production. In the area of vehicle production, Hawtai Motor, NEVS and CHTC New Energy Vehicle currently have production bases inside the zone.
