According to registration data from CBU Analytics, Toyota Prado was the bestselling imported SUV in China in 2015, with end-user sales of 45,263 units. The domestically made version of the same model had about half as much the registration, with 20,277 units sold to end users.
Among the top 10 bestselling locally produced SUV models in 2015, Chinese and joint venture brands split the rankings. Great Wall Haval had two models in the top 10, especially Haval H6, which led second place Volkswagen Tiguan by more than 100,000 units in registration. Chang’an also had two models in the top 10, and JAC Refine S3 took third place. In addition to Volkswagen, Honda, Nissan, Buick and Ford had one model each in the top 10. The price range of Chinese brand SUVs in the top 10 are mostly between ¥100,000 ($15,385) and ¥150,000, while that for JV brands is mostly between ¥250,000 and ¥300,000. All models in the top 10 are compact SUVs.
Among the top 10 bestselling imported SUVs in 2015, BMW and Porsche each had two models while Jeep, Land Rover, Subaru, Cadillac and Renault each had one model. Four of the top 10 imported SUV models were full-size SUVs while five of the top 10 were super-luxury SUVs priced well over ¥700,000. Toyota Prado, Jeep Compass and Subaru Forester were models with strong off-road capabilities.
