Toyota recalls thousands of Prius hybrid cars in China

Toyota is recalling 1.9 million Prius hybrid cars globally because of software fault, including 3,210 units in the Chinese market, reported BBC News.

The recalled cars are made between March 2009 and February 2014.

The Japanese carmaker said it had identified more than 400 reports of the problem, with three-fourths of them occurring in Japan.

No accidents or injuries have been reported over the defect, Toyota said.

The software problem can set off warning lights, and will “probably cause the vehicle to enter a failsafe” mode, which will see the car’s driving power reduced.

“In limited cases, the hybrid system might shut down and the vehicle will stop, perhaps while being driven,” Toyota said.

The Prius was first released in 1997 and is one of the most popular hybrid vehicles on the market.

The recalled cars account for more than half of the cumulative sales of the Prius globally.

The Prius recall in China started from February 12. The recalled 3,210 Prius hybrid cars were made between December 20, 2011 and January 28, 2014.
