Toyota’s China sales up 53 percent to 72,000 units in January

BEIJING – Toyota sold 72,000 vehicles in China in January 2010, up 53 percent year-on-year, according to a February 4 report by The Wall Street Journal citing Niu Yu, spokesman of Toyota Motor (China) Investment Co., Ltd.

Toyota, the world’s largest automaker by sales, has recently been battered by a storm of recalls. Earlier, it announced plans to recall 75,552 RAV4 sport utility vehicles sold in China due to defective acceleration pedals.

Meanwhile, its U.S. sales in January plunged by 16 percent to less than 100,000 units.
