SHANGHAI – Smart EV and mobility service startup WM Motor founded by industry veteran Freeman Shen debuted its new logo and first mass production battery electric SUV – the EX5, on December 11 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai not too far away from its headquarters.
Claiming to be an affordable, smart electric people’s car with a starting price of ¥200,000 that is joyful to use, the compact SUV has a range of 600 km and will be accepting pre-orders in April 2018 at the Beijing Auto Show shortly after production commences at its smart manufacturing base in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province in early 2018.
The new logo, which WM Motor calls a “Living Logo,” is consisted of a circle plus five status bars. The blueish green logo is inspired from norther lights, with the circle representing ecosystem and the bars representing Cloud, Platform, People, Car and Multi Channels. The five bars in their uneven positions also form the letter W and M inside the circle.
“In the smart EV arena, the best brands are not BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Audi. They will be Chinese,” said Shen. “The Chinese auto industry will stand on top of the world. I firmly believe that day will come.”
Interested customers can already sign up on WM Motor’s website to receive a special invitation number for the pre-order of the EX5 starting today until April 18, 2018, and WM Motor will be accepting deposits for the pre-order from April 28-May 4, 2018.
WM Motor’s debut of the logo and the EX5 comes six days after it said it completed its latest round of financing led by Baidu Capital as well as several other internet strategic and financial investors including Baidu Group, SIG Haina Asia and Ambiba. The undisclosed sum of the latest financing round has pushed total financing in the startup so far to more than ¥12 billion, driving ahead WM Motor’s mobility ecosystem development strategy centered on smart EVs for the masses.
Baidu Group President and COO Lu Qi said at the launch ceremony that WM Motor may be a new company but boasts core competencies including design, R&D, integration and supply chain capabilities and Baidu is very happy to be working with a company with a product philosophy and strategy revolved around turning artificial intelligence technologies into quality and affordable user experiences.
Can WM Motor deliver as promised and become the Weltmeister (World Champion) of smart EVs?
