Auto Guangzhou 2017 recap: SUVs continue to sizzle

Auto Guangzhou 2017, or the 15th China (Guangzhou) International Automobile Exhibition, was held on November 17-26. 

The show featured 220,000 square meters of display space and 1,081 vehicles including 47 global debuts, 25 concept vehicles and 132 new energy vehicles. More than 670,000 people visited the show.

Following are highlights of key new locally-produced passenger vehicle models revealed or launched at the show (listed alphabetically by brand/make). SUVs continued to dominate the new vehicle lineup. – Editor

 

 

CHINESE BRANDS

 

BAIC BJEV ARCFOX LITE

Based on the ARCFOX-1 Concept and positioned as a two-seater micro EV, the ARCFOX LITE is the first production EV from BAIC BJEV’s ARCFOX brand. Two variants were launched to market at ¥140,800 and ¥150,800 (¥86,800 and ¥96,800 after subsidies). The car features LED screens in both the front and rear of the vehicle that can show texts or emoticons that can be customized by drivers, as well as three LCD screens including the instrument, center console and for the front passenger. It has exterior dimensions of 2,986×1,676×1,492 mm (LxWxH) with a wheelbase of 1,870 mm, a 36-kW electric motor and a range of 200 km. Battery can be charged to 80 percent full in 30 minutes via fast charging.

 

BAIC BJEV ET400

Yet another electric SUV from BAIC BJEV, the ET400 is based on the EX400L Concept and has a combined maximum range of 350 km. With exterior dimensions of 4,405×1,810×1,673 mm (LxWxH) and a wheelbase of 2,650 mm, it is larger than the EX260 electric SUV. A battery pack with energy density of 134.5 Wh/kg and a permanent magnetic motor with a maximum power of 160 kW and peak torque of 300 Nm power the SUV, giving the vehicle a maximum speed of 160 km/h and electricity consumption of 17.3 kWh/100 km.

 

BAIC Hyosow S7

The mid-size 7-seater SUV from BAIC Hyosow hit the market at a price range of ¥78,800-¥115,800 available in seven variants, all of which will be powered by a 1.5T engine with maximum horsepower of 150 and peak torque of 220 Nm, mated with a 6-speed MT or 8-speed AT. Exterior dimensions of the vehicle are 4,800×1,850 x1,760 mm (LxWxH) with a wheelbase of 2,780 mm. The 2.0T version (280 Turbo) with maximum power of 184 horsepower and peak torque of 285 Nm will hit the market in 2018.

 

Brilliance Jinbei Zhonghua V6

The compact SUV will hit the market on December 22 at retail prices of ¥89,800-¥124,800. The exterior dimensions of 4,620×1,922×1,734 mm and wheelbase of 2,725 mm puts it in direct competition with the Haval H6. The model will feature a BriAir telematics system developed jointly by iFlyTek and amap and reportedly can understand 20 local Chinese dialects. It will be powered by a 1.5T engine with maximum power of 152 hp mated with 6-speed MT or 7-speed DCT.

 

SAIC-GM-Wuling Baojun 530

The third SUV from the Baojun brand after the 510 and 560 has a length of 4,655 mm, width of 1,835 mm, height of 1,760 mm and wheelbase of 2,750 mm. It will be available with a choice of a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine or a 1.5T turbocharged engine. Expect it to hit the market in the first half of 2018 and become a major challenger for the Haval H6. Baojun sold 744,962 vehicles in the first 10 months of 2017, up 45.3 percent.

 

Chang’an Raeton CC

Trying to become a new benchmark for Chinese brand B-segment sedans, the Raeton CC is the first vehicle from Chang’an to adopt its all new “Life Dynamic” design language, which is reflected through a Lexus-like front grille. It has exterior dimensions of 4,780 x1,825×1,465 mm (LxWxH) and a wheelbase of 2,770 mm. A 1.5T engine with a maximum power of 115 kW will power the vehicle, which will hit the market on December 20 with seven variants rumored to be priced between ¥101,600 and ¥148,000.

 

Chang’an New Eado

The second generation of the Eado also adopts Chang’an’s new design language with a notable change in the front grille. With exterior dimensions of 4,710×1,820×1,490 mm (LxWxH) and a wheelbase of 2,700 mm, it is 90 mm longer with a 40 mm longer wheelbase than the outgoing generation. It is powered by a JL478QEN 1.6L naturally aspirated engine with maximum power of 128 kW mated with either manual or automatic transmissions.

 

Changhe Q7

The Range Rover look-a-like vehicle is the first SUV from Changhe since being acquired by BAIC and is expected to hit the market in March 2018. It has exterior dimensions of 4,655×1,855×1,720 mm and a wheelbase of 2,670 mm, available in both 5-seat and 7-seat versions. A 4A91T 1.5T engine with maximum power of 110 kW and peak torque of 210 Nm will power the vehicle and mated with either 6MT or CVT transmissions.

 

Chery EXEED TX

The Chinese version of the EXEED TX, which had its global debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, will have a longer wheelbase at 2,715 mm, while exterior dimensions of 4,690×1,800×1,700 mm (LxWxH) stay the same. Based on the M3X platform and adopting Chery’s latest design language, the EXEED TX is expected to hit the domestic market in October 2018. Features of the vehicle include a 10-inch LCD screen and a new artificial intelligence telematics system developed with Baidu that provides voice and facial recognition. A 1.5T or 1.6T engine will power the vehicle along with a 7-speed DCT. Pure electric and plug-in hybrid variants will also be offered.

 

Dearcc EV10

Contract manufactured by Southeast Motor, the A0-segment EV hit the market on November 16 at a price range of ¥133,800-¥141,800 (before subsidies). The vehicle has exterior dimensions of 3,692×1,650×1,551 mm with a wheelbase of 2,400 mm. A 9-inch center touch screen controls virtually all functions of the vehicle except air conditioning. It has a maximum range of 155 km, maximum speed of 100 km/h and can be charged to 80 percent full in 48 minutes via fast charging.

 

FAW-Toyota EV Concept

Based on partner FAW’s Junpai A70E, the EV concept sedan badged with the FAW logo is a move by Toyota to speed up its efforts to introduce locally-produced EVs in China, through the possibility of using partner FAW’s EV platforms for future EV products made at the joint venture. The vehicle has exterior dimensions of 4,610×1,790×1,500 mm and a wheelbase of 2,652 mm, and is powered by a 109 hp motor, giving it a range of 205 km and maximum speed of 280 km/h.

 

GAC Trumpchi GM8

Targeting the high-end market, GAC Motor’s first MPV was created on the company’s level C platform that has integrated the world’s top resources and cutting-edge technologies. The grandeur of the new MPV is not only reflected on its spectacular exterior design, but also luxurious captain’s seating, intelligent technologies and excellent security features. It is expected to be launched in China on December 30 with a price range of ¥180,000-¥270,000.

 

GAC iSpace

The smart EV concept highlights a groundbreaking concept of “car stops, life starts” which views the vehicle as a mobile living space that can switch between driving and living modes easily. It is based on extensive research on the young generation’s driving habits and lifestyle and a result of a joint cooperation with Chinese tech giant Tencent.

 

GAC-Toyota E Concept

Based on partner GAC Group’s Trumpchi GS4, the electric concept SUV badged with the GAC logo is a move by Toyota to speed up its efforts to introduce locally-produced EVs in China, through the possibility of using partner GAC’s EV platforms for future EV products made at the joint venture.

 

Geely Vision S1

The latest small crossover from Geely hit the market at a price range of ¥69,900-¥102,900 and complements the Emgrand GS. Targeted at the post-90s generation, it offers an 8-inch center screen with Geely’s G-NETLINK 3.0 smart vehicle operation system. Powertrain options include 1.4T+CVT or 1.5L+5MT, where the 1.4T offers maximum power of 98 kW and peak torque of 215 Nm.  

 

Great Wall Motor Haval H4

Slotted between the H2 and H6, the H4 will be powered by 1.3T or 1.5T engines and hit the market in Q1 2018 in Haval’s usual Red and Blue variants. Both variants have the same wheelbase of 2,660 mm but the Red has exterior dimensions of 4,420×1,845×1,695 mm (LxWxH) while the Blue variant has exterior dimensions of 4,410×1,845x,1695 mm (LxWxH). The 1.3T engine has maximum power of 102 kW and peak torque of 225 Nm while the 1.5T engine has maximum power of 124 kW and peak torque of 285 Nm, all mated with a 7-speed DCT.

 

Great Wall Motor WEY P8

Claiming to be China’s first plug-in hybrid luxury SUV, the P8 is the work of five years of design and three rounds of extreme weather testing, and is expected to go on sale in Q1 2018.

Based on WEY’s first high-end new energy technology platform, the PLUG-in intelligent 4WD (Pi4) platform, the P8 offers five types of driving modes plus three types of all-road functions with energy regeneration rate as high as 65 percent. Slightly longer than the VV7, the P8 will be powered by a 2.0T engine with an electric motor and 48V hybrid system that give a combined power of 250 kW and peak torque of 524 Nm. Combined driving range is 660 km, including a 50-km range under pure electric mode.

 

JAC Refine M6

The high-end MPV hit the market at retail prices of ¥239,500-¥349,500, putting it in direct competition with the Buick GL8 and the soon-to-be launched GAC Trumpchi GM8. The vehicle has exterior dimensions of 5,005×1,850×1,970 mm (LxWxH) with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm. It will be offered with a powertrain combination of 2.0T engine with maximum power of 140 kW and peak torque of 290 Nm with a 6-speed DCT.

 

Land Wind Xiaoyao

The SUV coupe from Land Wind is based on the Xiaoyao Concept and adopts a so-called soulful Chinese design. It will be powered by the same 1.5GTDI engine developed with support from JMC’s partner Ford and 6-speed MT or CVT used on the X7. It will have a pre-sale price of ¥90,000-¥140,000 and officially hit the market in January 2018.

 

SAIC Motor Roewe Ei5

Dubbed as the world’s first pure battery electric internet station wagon, the Ei5 is powered by an 85 kW electric motor offering a maximum range of 400 km. The model has exterior dimensions of 4,544×1,818×1,509 mm (LxWxH) and a wheelbase of 2,665 mm.

 

Southeast DX3 EV

The electric SUV is expected to hit the market in Q2 2018 at a starting retail price of around ¥100,000 after subsidies. Based on the DX3, the EV version is powered by a 90 kW electric motor and gives the vehicle a maximum speed of 130 km/h. A 43.1 kWh battery pack gives it a range of 310 km.

 

 

FOREIGN BRANDS

GAC-Acura Acura TLX-L

The second locally-produced model from Acura after the CDX SUV will go on sale in December at a starting price of no higher than ¥280,000. The model has a wheelbase of 2,900 mm, 125 mm longer than its overseas version, and all five variants will be equipped with 2.4L+8DCT powertrain combinations, with maximum power of 153 kW and peak torque of 247 Nm. It adopts Acura’s “Acura Precision Concept” design language with “Jewel Eye” LED headlights, Acura Watch advanced future intelligent safety system and IDS intelligent power system with four driving modes.

 

BMWBrilliance BMW 5 Series Le

Powered by BMW’s third generation eDrive technology, the PHEV model made its global debut in Guangzhou before officially hitting the market in early 2018. One of the highlights of the model is that it will be the first locally-produced NEV model to offer wireless charging. The 2.0T engine and motor combination offers a combined range of 650 km and pure electric mode range of 61 km, giving it a fuel consumption rating of as low as 1.9L/100 km. The system has maximum power of 185 kW and peak torque of 420 Nm. Acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h is only 6.9 s. Owners enjoy free charging box for home use and charging installation service, and can use more than 65,000 ChargeNow charging poles in more than 60 cities for the vehicle by the end of 2017.

 

Beijing-Hyundai Hyundai Encino

Based on the Hyundai Kona unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the new SUV will be the smallest from Beijing-Hyundai’s SUV lineup and is expected to hit the market in Q1 2018. It will be available in 1.0T, 1.6T and 2.0L powertrain variants, delivering maximum power of 88 kW, 130 kW and 110 kW respectively.

 

Chery-JLR Jaguar XEL

Developed exclusively for the Chinese market, the Jaguar XEL is the second Jaguar to be locally-produced and fourth Jaguar Land Rover model locally-produced overall after the Jaguar XFL, Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport. Delivering great dynamics and peerless design of the standard XE with enhanced space, comfort and state-of-the-art infotainment technology customers expect from a long-wheelbase Jaguar, the XEL has an additional 100 mm wheelbase length.

 

SAIC-Volkswagen Škoda Karoq

Positioned below the Kodiaq, the Karoq will be the second true SUV from Škoda to be locally-produced and heads a series of three new SUV models that will be introduced next year in China to further strengthen the brand’s growth in China. The model recently rolled off the production at SAIC-Volkswagen’s Ningbo plan, where the Volkswagen Teramont is produced, and is expected to hit the market in Q1 2018. Exterior dimensions of the model are 4,432×1,841×1,604 mm (LxWxH) with a wheelbase of 2,688 mm, which is 50 mm longer than the overseas version. It is expected to be powered by a 1.2T or 1.4T engine with 7-speed DCT.

 

FAW-Toyota IZOA/GAC-Toyota C-HR

The Toyota TNGA WAY Concept will lead to the IZOA and C-HR small SUVs that will be produced at FAW-Toyota and GAC-Toyota in 2018, respectively. They will represent the second model to be locally-produced with Toyota’s TNGA production concept, following the 8th generation Camry, and will be powered by Toyota’s latest 2.0L TNGA Engine.

 

FAW-Volkswagen T-ROCSTAR

The T-ROCSTAR will lead to the first SUV model from FAW-Volkswagen that will launch by summer 2018. It is about the size of a Volkswagen Golf and will be positioned as an A-segment SUV. Based on the T-ROC concept, the T-ROCSTAR is exclusively developed for the Chinese market.

 

GAC-Toyota Camry (8th Gen)

As the first model based on Toyota’s TNGA product architecture, the 8th generation Camry has been refreshed from almost every component, including an all-new 2.5L Dynamic Force Engine, Direct Shift-8AT transmission, new chassis and suspension, as well as a more sporty and stylish exterior design. It will be available in 2.5L, 2.5L HEV and 2.0L variants priced from ¥179,800 to ¥279,800. The length, width and wheelbase of the model have been extended by 35, 15 and 50 mm respectively from the outgoing generation. The hybrid version features a THS II system with a combined power of 160 kW and fuel consumption of 4.1L/100 km, as well as Toyota Safety Sense system.

 

Volvo Cars Volvo XC60

The latest generation XC60, the best seller among Volvo Cars’ model offerings in China, finally made its debut in China after its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. With pre-sale prices of ¥380,000-¥618,000, the new XC60 will be offered in T4, T5 and T8 (plug-in) variants and are expected to officially hit the market on December 20. Exterior dimensions remain the same as the overseas edition, at 4,688×1,902×1,658 mm (LxWxH) with a wheelbase of 2,865 mm. Exclusive features include emergency evasive assist, opposite direction evasive assist and blind spot monitoring with automatic steering.
