CHANGCHUN, Jilin – FAW Jiefang Automobile Co., Ltd., China’s leading heavy-duty truck manufacturer, completed the country’s first ever expressway truck platooning test here on October 6.
The test was conducted on a stretch of the National Expressway G25, or Changchun-Shenzhen Expressway, using a fleet of container transporters pulled by three FAW Jiefang J6L tractors.
The test comes after FAW Jiefang held a similar autonomous driving demonstration on a closed environment in April, and makes it China’s first commercial vehicle brand to conduct intelligent driving test on an expressway.
Different than what was demonstrated in April, the trucks tested were equipped with Level 2+ advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) with more advanced features. The testing environment also became more complex bringing more challenges. The three tractors also pulled containers trailers simulating real world situation. Features tested included ACC, AEB and LKAS.
The test was part of FAW Jiefang’s strategy specifying three stages of the company’s intelligent truck development: First, complete development of L3 autonomous driving based on high precision localization by 2018; second, complete development of L4 autonomous driving based on 5G network by 2020; and third, complete L5 autonomous driving by 2025.
FAW Jiefang has been one of the fastest growing heavy-duty truck makers in China, selling nearly 200,000 heavy-duty trucks in the first nine months of 2017. That’s nearly twice the level achieved in the same previous period and more than three times what were sold during the same period in 2015. Its market share in the segment reached nearly 23 percent by the end of September.
