BEIJING – Beijing Foton-Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. (BFCEC) celebrated its 10th anniversary on November 28 by producing its one millionth engine since the first engine rolled off the joint venture in 2009.
The one millionth engine produced is an X12 diesel engine for heavy-duty vehicles meeting Euro 6/China 6 emissions standards, and is based on the same engine off of Cummins’ X series heavy-duty powertrain platform that made its global debut at the IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover, Germany in 2016.
The X12 began production at BFCEC earlier this year and adopts numerous technologies including ADEPT smart assisted driving, Connected Diagnostic remote services, ISOPOD turbocharging and Leakless fuel system pressure protection. The 400 hp engine is able to achieve 2,300 Nm at 1,000 rpm.
“The success of Foton-Cummins is based on truly win-win cooperation,” said Steve Chapman, vice president of Cummins Group in fluent Chinese. “The advanced products and technologies from Cummins have helped Foton to rapidly grow both at home and abroad, while Foton’s success has also helped Cummins to continue to grow and develop in China.”
“Foton-Cummins is the benchmark for green, efficient, intelligent and environmentally friendly technologies,” said Gong Yueqiong, making his first public appearance as president of Foton after taking over the reins from former long-time president Wang Jinyu. “Foton and Cummins have cooperated effectively around green energy and Cummins has been a key driver of Foton’s transformation and upgrading.”
Dong Yang, executive vice president of China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), said in his address that the auto industry is moving into a new era of electric motor and traditional internal combustion engine integration. “The electric motor is back as an import power source, but this does not mean the end of the internal combustion engine,” said Dong.
BFCEC was formed in 2006 with a total investment of ¥4.9 billion. It produced its 100,000th engine in 2012 and has since produced another 900,000 units. It now produces F series 2.8L and 3.8L engines, F series 4.5L engines, G series 11L and 12L engines as well as the X12 engine, with a combined annual output capacity of 520,000 units.
The two partners recently invested ¥500 million to establish a new engineering center that will develop additional products for the future.
Cummins is the first foreign diesel engine manufacturer to set up an R&D center in China and has invested a total of more than $1 billion in the country. It now has 28 entities in China including 15 wholly-owned and joint ventures. It set up its first joint venture in China in 1995. It had revenues of $4 billion in China in 2016.
