HANGZHOU, Zhejiang – Li Chunrong, former board member and executive vice president of Dongfeng-Honda Engine Co., Ltd., has been appointed CEO of Proton by parent company Geely Holding Group.
He will be in charge of the overall management and operation of the Malaysian national car brand.
Li is a veteran of executive with Dongfeng Motor Corp. subsidiaries, having entered the state-owned company in 1987. He has previously held executive roles such as deputy director of the board secretary of Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd., executive vice president of Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia and president of Dongfeng Passenger Vehicle Co. Li has rich experience in the operation of Dongfeng’s namesake passenger vehicle brand and has done pioneering work in product planning, technology research and development as well as channel expansion.
Li has an MBA from MIT.
Geely bought 49.9 percent of Proton owned by Malaysia’s DRB-HICOM as well as 51 percent share of luxury sports car brand Lotus in June and officially became the sole foreign strategic investment partner with Proton. Li’s appointment as CEO of Proton means that the asset delivery between Geely Group and DRB-HICOM Group was basically completed.
