Major Chinese automakers’ sales performance in January

BEIJING – China’s passenger vehicle market remained strong growth momentum in the first month of this year and sales of Chinese brand vehicles continued to surge on a yearly basis, said China Automotive Information Net (CAIN) citing sales reports released recently by 16 Chinese automakers 

According to these automakers’ sales data collected by CAIN, total sales volume of SAIC-Volkswagen was 213,717 units in January, a year-on-year increase of 2.61 percent.

FAW-Volkswagen sold 198,000 units of Volkswagen and Audi brand vehicles in the month, up 8.5 percent over the same period of last year. Sales of Volkswagen brand vehicles were 147,000 units, surging 15.5 percent compared with a year ago, while that of Audi brand vehicles came to 51,000 units in the month.

Sales of FAW-Mazda skyrocketed by 93 percent on a yearly basis to 12,403 vehicles in January, ranking first among 16 automakers on the list in terms of growth rate.

Geely sales surged 70.82 percent to 102,700 vehicles in January, surpassing Great Wall Motor which reported a sales volume of 91,233 units in the month. Sales of Geely’s best-selling model the New Emgrand reached 26,314 units, a year-on-year increase of 17 percent, maintaining the top spot on sales list of Chinese brand passenger cars. The New Vision also passed the10,000-unit mark to 14,716 units in sales in the month. The Emgrand GL, which hit the market in September 2016, has achieved sales of more than 10,000 units for three consecutive months with sales volume of 10,208 units in January. Sales of Geely’s best-selling SUV model the NL3 reached 20,147 units in January, the second time to exceed 20,000-unit mark in monthly sales.

Great Wall Motor achieved sales of 91,233 vehicles in January including 81,500 SUVs which realized an increase of 9.9 percent on a yearly basis. The Haval H6 has been the sales champion in the SUV segment for 46 consecutive months.

SAIC Passenger Vehicle Co. sold 41,000 units of vehicles in January, jumping by 71.02 percent compared with the same period of last year. Total sales of Roewe brand vehicles were 31,135 units in the month, a year-on-year increase of 105 percent. In the SUV segment, the Roewe RX5 realized a sales volume of 20,008 units in January, surpassing the 20,000-unit mark for four consecutive months. In the passenger car segment, the Roewe 360 and Roewe 350 together achieved sales of nearly 10,000 units in the month.
