SHANGHAI – The InMotion Concept unveiled by National Electric Vehicles Sweden (NEVS) at CES Asia 2017 is a vision of how flexible transportation in a megacity could be in the future and a “new mobility solution packaged into a stylish design that has the principle of how people can best utilize their times traveling in a vehicle in the future,” according to Kai Johan Jiang, founder and chairman of NEVS.
“Our vision is to provide a sustainable future with smooth transportation and clean air,” said Jiang at a press conference on June 7. “How people utilize their times in the vehicle when the era of fully autonomous driving arrives is always personalized and our aim is to provide that personalized mobility solution that gives the passengers the freedom to arrive at their destination their way.”
The InMotion is an SAE Level 5 autonomous vehicle with flexible interior configurations that offer private, social or meeting modes where passengers can use a mobile App to control functionality such as seat movements, interior environment features and ambient lighting.
“Today 3.9 billion people live in cities and that number is continuing to rise. Urbanization brings opportunities but more challenges for us and we are dedicated to provide solutions that solve people’s mobility needs in cities and focused on developing zero emissions EVs to improve their livelihood,” said Jiang.
“In a not too distant future, we will offer ecosystems in cooperation with mobility and technology partners that give a fantastic offering: a solution that connects people and society to new opportunities,” said Stefan Tilk, vice chairman of NEVS. “NEVS was founded on the idea of making change, to improve not only individuals as users but also the society at large and of course the environment.”
While the InMotion Concept is a vision of the future, the battery electric 9-3 sedan and 9-3X SUV unveiled at CES Asia 2017, although still in concept stage as well, are more of what will be available in the near term – summer 2018 to be exact.
“Both cars will be launched after the summer (of 2018),” Mattias Bergman, president of NEVS, told CBU/CAR after the press conference. “Early next year we will start homologations and as soon as they are homologated, we will start regular production of sellable cars.”
The 9-3 and 9-3X have highly identifiable designs ques of Saab, the main assets of which NEVS acquired in 2012. Asked about the association of this heritage, Bergman told CBU/CAR that the 9-3 and 9-3X are not copies but rather reflects efforts to take the best of Saab and developing into NEVS’ own products.
“It’s an evolution from the Saab history into something better,” said Bergman. “When we engineered the products, we did it with the purpose of solving customers’ needs and that comes from the Saab heritage. We keep that Swedish heritage in terms of selection of quality materials and the cleanliness inside the vehicle.”
Bergman said NEVS will gradually add more cars and services and it will be important to test different applications in different cities, and Tianjin, where NEVS will be producing the 9-3 and 9-3X, will begin an extensive pilot project to develop city mobility solutions in cooperation with the Tianjin Binhai High-Tech Zone (THT). The ambition is to build up an innovation cluster with pioneering green technologies that benefits the city and its more than 15 million citizens.
“What works in Tianjin will not work in Sweden,” said Bergman. “We will have a number of projects that will test different applications with participation from regular consumers.”
The 9-3 and 9-3X, according to Tilk, will have a range of over 300 km and are engineered and designed for exceptional driving and riding experiences.
“They are equipped with connected technologies and can interact with future mobility services,” said Tilk. “From day one, we will be able to receive constantly over the air software updates on features and functionality. When the cars are launched in 2018, we will add additional updates in both the interior and exterior.”
As an important step to achieve its vision of future urban mobility, NEVS’ Tianjin Joint Venture NNEV (National New Energy Vehicle Co., Ltd.) announced that they will adopt Microsoft’s advanced Cloud technology to power NEVS’ mobility solutions globally.
The partnership will aim to enhance the in-car experience of NEVS products and service with Microsoft’s forefront technology in connectivity.
“Microsoft, with their very rich knowledge and experience in the digital services will play an important role in NEVS transformation from an electric vehicle manufacturer to a mobility service provider,” said Bergman. “We look forward to a more in-depth cooperation in areas such as car connectivity, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence to create more possibilities in the new energy vehicle industries.” Other partners NEVS are already working with include Renesas and Didi Chuxing, according to Tilk.
NEVS is the ninth of 15 companies in China who have been granted manufacturing licenses for the production of battery electric vehicles thus far.
