Party time at Auto China 2018: new forces, big screens and being more Chinese

This year’s largest auto show in the world – Auto China 2018, or the 15th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition – once again pitted established foreign automakers against rising Chinese local brands.

But a new breed of smart EV startups – the so-called new automotive manufacturing force (also known as “internet” or “PPT” carmakers) – crashed the party and stole the spotlight with concepts and production vehicles that are coming off “PPT” lines, onto production lines and into showrooms. Not only did they attract the attention from media and industry people, CEOs of global and Chinese automakers including Dr. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of management of Daimler and head of Mercedes-Benz, and Zhu Yanfeng, chairman of Dongfeng Motor Corp., among others, were also spotted inspecting vehicles at the stands of these smart EV startups.
