BEIJING – The Ministry of Public Security (MPS) announced on August 13 that special NEV license plates would be used nationally in the first half of 2018.
Since December 1, 2016, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuxi, Jinan and Shenzhen have been the pilot cities to use such license plates dedicated to NEVs. Currently, these five pilot cities have issued 76,000 special NEV license plates. According to the unified arrangement of the MPS, 10 cities will be added to use special NEV license plates in November 2017.
There are two kinds of special NEV license plates for small NEVs and large NEVs. The special license plate for small NEVs is gradient green, and the special license plate for large NEVs is yellow and green. All special NEV license plates have six digits instead of five for normal license plates.
The special NEV license plate has a special mark which uses green as base color and represents new energy. And in the green circle of the mark, the right is electric plug shape and the colorful left is similar to English letter “E”. In order to improve the anti-counterfeiting performance, special NEV license plates also adopt two-dimensional barcode, anti-fake shading mark, laser pattern and other anti-counterfeiting technology.
“We adopt a voluntary principle for the owners of previously registered NEVs, so they can choose to continue to use the original license plates or get special NEV license plates in relevant departments through making an appointment online,” said Wang Qiang, deputy director of the MPS Traffic Administration Bureau.
