ZHENGZHOU, Henan – Xpeng Motors produced the 10,000th G3 smart electric SUV on June 18 at its Zhengzhou Xpeng smart factory via manufacturing partner Haima Auto, becoming the third Chinese smart EV startup to have reached the production milestone following NIO and WM Motor.
The milestone comes 188 days after the G3 was officially launched to market on December 12, 2018 and just four months after quantity deliveries began in February, making Xpeng Motors the fastest among Chinese smart EV startups to reach the milestone.
“I thank our customers from 224 cities in China,” said He Xiaopeng, chairman and CEO of Xpeng Motors. “We are rapidly building our operational system involving sales, charging, online e-commerce, autonomous driving AI and our owners. This is just the beginning.”
He also thanked Xpeng Motors’ employees, partners, the media, Haima and investors for their support via a personal WeChat post, saying that the milestone represents another major step forward for Xpeng Motors’ ambitions toward an internet car era.
The Xpeng smart factory in Zhengzhou covers an area of nearly 440,000 square meters and has 273 smart robots including 250 ABB robots in its welding line, giving it an automation of 85 percent.
Xpeng Motors was the No. 1 selling Chinese smart EV startup brand in May with sales of 2,704 units, according to the China Passenger Car Association. Cumulative sales in the first five months reached 7,359 units, which means it’s on track to deliver 10,000 units by the end of July as previously planned.
The company recently pushed another OTA for G3 owners providing them with the Xmart OS 1.4 edition which offers an ICA function that makes the G3 drive by itself in a lane above 60 km/h. Its second model, the P7 smart electric sedan presented at the recent Auto Shanghai 2019, is expected to hit the market by yearend.
Xpeng Motors is reportedly nearing completion for another round of financing totaling about $600 million.
Competitors NIO and WM Motor produced their 10,000th vehicles in November 27, 2018 and February 28, 2019, respectively.
